I Adore DIY for Kids

I love teaching. I love interacting with the kids all day and listening to the funny things they say. One of the funnest (not a word) things I do with the kids is craft and DIY. The above is a sneak peak of our classroom and the cool and easy things I’ve made with the kids to decorate our room and make it feel more inviting. The best part is that everything is made from paper (so very cheap) – imagine what could be done with a budget! I suppose you can tell I’ve gone with a circus theme this term – I wanted the kids to feel like when they came to school, they were running away to the circus – leaving all normal things behind and exploring the crazy.

The flowers in the top pictures were fun and simple to make. I saw them in a picture on the Poppies for Grace website. They make some amazing decorations, but like I always do when I see something I like, I think “I can do that!” and then I have a go. The paper pom poms are super easy too. My kids made them with their big buddies and it was so awesome putting all of them together in big bunches – some are in bright colours and the rest are in recycled newspaper. The circus theme has been great fun to play around with. Big bright bunting flags, stripey shop fronts and a big red curtain. Love getting the kids’ imaginations rolling…

  1. Hi Sophie, What year do you teach? My daughter Tegan is keen to teach primary art also… But is doing Graphic Design at moment! Love your style and wishing you could teach my little kids when they start school next year! Fun is the best way to inspire. Great job. Jude :-)

    • Good on you Michele – with every body leading such busy lives these days so many children just don’t get the opportunity to do arts and crafts at home – my children love it as well – very hard to keep them away from my scrapbooking stash!

  6. If my girls – grades 3 and 6 – loved you on The Block, they would adore you as their teacher. Your school is very lucky to have you. That is easily the best classroom I have ever seen!

  7. Wow, if I had teachers like you when I was at school, I might have enjoyed it a little more. Love it, great to see you are teaching kids to use their imaginations!

  8. Your classroom looks like so much fun! I’m in my final year of studying primary education, so this is definately inspiration for when I get my own class (hopefully) next year!

  9. That looks fantastic! I’m a cardmaker/scrapbooker so love making things out of cardstock or paper! Non crafty people would be amazed how easy it can be! I wish my kids were in your class, not contemplating a move to Narre Warren? Lol! Keep up the amazing work!
